In the largest mass expulsion of Soviet diplomats from the United States - 55 are ordered to leave the U.S. by November 5. It was retaliation for the expulsion from Moscow of five American diplomats this week.

Police smash through windows and doors and arrest 16 who barricaded themselves inside the University of Texas president’s office to protest the school’s investments in South Africa.

The U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt - the newest aircraft carrier, is launched this week in Norfolk, VA. With the commissioning of the Roosevelt, the Navy has 14 super carriers available for duty.

Britain breaks diplomatic relations with Syria after its ambassador was implicated in an attempt to blow up an Israeli airliner. The United States says it is withdrawing its ambassador to Syria in a show of support.

Thomas P. (Tip) O’Neil Jr. (73) retires from Congress after 34 of service. O’Neil moved up the ladder from backbencher to majority whip, to majority leader, and then to House Speaker in 1977. By his own estimation, he’s passed up more than 100 state dinners. “It’s just not my cup of tea.”

Scientists in Antarctica report that a chemical process is apparently responsible for an alarming “hole” in the atmospheric ozone layer. Scientists emphasized that their findings are preliminary and that the cause “may well be something not yet thought of.” The thinning of the ozone above the South Pole was first reported by British scientists last year.

Comedian Chevy Chase (Saturday Night Live) is released from the Betty Ford drug rehabilitation center near Palm Springs. A spokesman said the comedian would continue therapy for his back problems. 

Passing - Roscoe (Gadabout) Gaddis (90) - known to millions of television viewers as “the flying fisherman.”

Passing - actor Forrest Tucker (67). Perhaps best-known as Sgt Morgan O’Rourke In “F-Troop.” He had been battling cancer for a year.
