In The News

A jammed bolt and tricky crosswinds delay the space shuttle Challenger. Located on a hatch door, the bolt was cross-threaded and took about an hour to remove. By that time cold crosswinds clocked at 30 knots were whipping around the shuttle, too dangerous if the craft had to return to make an emergency landing. The setback threatens an attempt to get a close-up look at Haley’s comet. In addition, the Challenger is set to deploy an important NASA tracking satellite. “It’s just not our day” said Robert Sieck, a NASA launch director. The launch has been rescued for tomorrow morning at 9:38a (eastern) time. Most of the attention is focused on passenger Christa McAuliffe, a New England schoolteacher who is destined to become the first teacher in space.

After one minute and 15 seconds into its launch at 9:38a (eastern), the space shuttle Challenger explodes into a huge fireball with all seven members feared dead.  Later in the morning, President Reagan said that there would be no more manned space missions until the cause of the disaster is established.  “It’s a horrible thing we all have witnessed.”

NASA pleads with souvenir hunters to not steal clues from Challenger debris  - either from the ocean or debris that has washed-up on the beach. Some of the protective tiles and other debris were found on Atlantic beaches.
