A bomb kills the Ayatollah Mohammad Beheshti - the second most powerful man in Iran plus 18 Parliament members at the Tehran headquarters of the ruling Islamic Republican Party. The Ayatollah Khomeini was the only senior Iranian political figure not present at the meeting.
The Reagan administration orders the dismissal of 370 of the 959 employees at the Solar Energy research Institute in Golden, CO. The administration says it believes most of that work is best suited for private firms.
The Supreme Court rules that Woman can be excluded from military draft registration and any military draft. The decision overturns a lower court’s ruling that the act is an unconstitutional form of sex discrimination.
A cable on the Brooklyn Bridge snaps, injuring Armi Akira as he was on the walkway. Authorities say the cable was weakened by pigeon droppings, when combined with the rain form nitric acid. Akira suffered a fractured skull and is in serious condition. The cable is one of several intended to keep the bridge stable during windy conditions.

Legendary personality/disc jockey Gary Owens finishes a 19 year-run at radio station KMPC (710) in Los Angeles - where he held down the afternoon drive shift. Owens is best known to the nation as the announcer on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-in. He’s also the voice of countless commercials and cartoons including the 1960’s cartoon “Roger Ramjet.” KMPC is leaning into a talk format. Many of KMPC’s past personalities also did TV stints over the years - especially game shows - especially Wink Martindale and Geoff Edwards.
