Hands bloodied from handshakes in San Antonio, President Carter warns Democrats on the campaign trail that “Wednesday morning you may wake up and face the prospect of a Republican in the Oval Office for the next four years.” National polls show President Carter running several points behind Reagan.
Ronald Reagan is elected the nation’s 40th President by a landslide. Reagan carried 40 states with 462 electoral votes with President Carter carrying 5 states and 45 electoral votes.
The GOP takes control of the senate - the first time in 26 years.
The Ayatollah Khomeini tells the militant solders holding the 52 American hostages to turn them over to the Iranian government. As events unfold - the Iranian government says it will announce terms for their release, but then announces that Algeria will take care of the hostages.
A Westchester County, NY judge rules that admissions by Jean Harris that she shot Dr Herman Tarnower can be admitted into court. Jury selection in the case begins this week. Dr Tarnower is the author of “The Scarsdale Diet.” Harris told officers that she had shot him because she had “had it” with his womanizing. The murder took place March 10.

Actor Steve McQueen - crippled by terminal cancer, dies of a heart attack in a Juarez, Mexico hospital. With him was his third wife - Barbara, son Chad and daughter Teri. The actor revealed last month that he was undergoing controversial treatments in Mexico for a rare form of lung cancer.
People Magazine says that at least 91 of the 220 cast and crewmembers of the movie “The Conquerer”-1956 have contacted cancer. So far, 46 have died from cancer. The movie was filmed almost 140 miles from the atomic testing range at Yucca Flat, Nevada. The dead include all the starring cast - John Wayne, Susan Hayward, Agnes Moorhead and producer-director - Dick Powell - all died from cancer. According to the article, several members of the cast and crew or family members are considering lawsuits against the government.
In bankruptcy court in Las Vegas, Jerry Lewis will pay over half his $50 thousand a month take-home pay to creditors, plus his ex-wife Patti will receive $108,000 a year under terms filed with the court. She is seeking a separate payout action in California. The Lewis’ separated in August - ending their 35-year marriage.

Mike Jagger and ex-wife Bianca reach an out-of-court settlement. The terms weren’t disclosed, but Bianca looked happy. The couple divorced last year, after Mick admitted adultery with model Jerry Hall. Earlier, Bianca was awarded $1.4 million - but she claimed it didn’t give her a sufficient chunk of Mick’s fortune.
