Estimated cost for such equipment to the consumer would cost about $20 a month, plus an initial cost outlay of equipment… The FCC - which recently denied the license RKO’s WNAC-TV (channel 7) in Boston, says the  ompany isn’t fit to keep its other TV stations either. RKO has stations in the top-2 markets as well - New York WOR-TV (Channel 9) and KHJ-TV (Channel 9) in Los Angeles. In denying the Boston license - the FCC case was based on an investigation of RKO’s parent company - General Tire, by the Securities and Exchange Commission. In a report to the SEC, General Tire said that it made a wide array of questionable contributions and payments between 1971 and 1976…

It was first talked about in 1978 but now, the channel - Cable News Network will launch on June 1. It’s the brainchild of Ted Turner (41). First year budget is $25 million. Already, Turner has been signing up cable systems and has nearly 3 million subscribers. And it has signed a major advertiser - Bristol-Myers to a $25-million, 10-year contract… ESPN expects to have their channel available to 4 million homes by the end of the month. ESPN says that by 1985, an estimated 23 million homes will be capable of receiving the channel. That may give it enough clout to compete with CBS, NBC and ABC for bigger sporting events. ESPN was the brainchild of its current board chairman, Bill Rasmussen. Employed in 1978, as a play-by-play for the New England Whalers hockey team, he got the idea of an all- sports channel while being stuck in traffic. ESPN currently offers programs 98 hours each week and its goal is 24-hour programming 7 days per week. Getty Oil purchased the channel last year for $10 million…

April -  Lafayette Electronics - at one time one of the country’s largest consumer electronic chains, is liquidating 60 of its remaining 68 stores. At one point the 60-year-old company maintained 125 retail outlets in 15 states. Lafayette blamed its troubles on reversals in the market for stereo equipment spurred by increased competition and a decline in sales of CB radios, which they stocked heavily….

CNN’s first-year budget is $30 million - about a quarter what each network spends on their news… The FCC votes to limit the coverage of so-called “clear channel” AM stations to 750 miles, opening up 125 new night stations which will be assigned to those channels…
