The Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church elect 58-year-old Polish Cardinal Korol Wojtyla as Pope. He took the name John Paul, the same as his predecessor and will be known as John Paul II. He’s the first non-Italian since 1522 to be elected Pontiff.

The Senate passes it energy bill and a once-in-a-lifetime federal tax exemption for the first $100,000 profit from the sale of a home by persons over 55 years old.
