President Carter, returning to the human rights theme that dominated his first months in office said that Western Hemisphere nations which engage in repression would face retaliatory action from the U.S.

Former California Gov. Ronald Reagan declares that landlords and businessmen now have a “responsibility” to lower rents and prices because of the property-tax savings they will reap under Proposition 13.

Defending champ Bjorn Borg of Sweden, bidding to become the first tennis player in 42 years to win Wimbledon three years in succession, is seeded No. 1 for the men’s singles. Borg is seeded ahead of Jimmy Connors of the U.S. for the tournament which begins next week. 

Tom Seaver – now in his 12th major league season and first full campaign with the Reds - finally gets his first no-hitter in a game against the Cardinals. Seaver had five one-hit games.

Bill Lee the unpredictable left-hander of the Boston Red Sox, bolts the club before a game with Seattle, saying he wouldn’t return unless general manager Haywood Sullivan apologizes for selling his close friend, Bernie Carbo, to the Cleveland Indians.

Rookie Nancy Lopez (21) reaches a pinnacle of golf history by becoming the first LPGA player to win five straight tournaments. Meanwhile Andy North wins the U.S. Open at Cherry Hills.
