President Ford says that Americans will have to live for the next year or so, with 8% unemployment and continued high inflation. “From all-Americans, we must ask for perseverance and a willingness to tolerate some painful measures necessary to regain good economic health.” “I think we can promise everybody that next year will be better.”
Senator Barry Goldwater (R-AZ) says the 94th Congress is “dangerous.” “When you find five out of six new members of the House apposed to military spending at a time when this country is becoming weaker in the international field, I think that’s dangerous.” “And you find a Congress now dominated by selfish interest groups such as the labor movement, Common Cause, the League of Women Voters and so forth and so on.”
Speaking at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville - former White House counsel John W. Dean tells students that he’s deeply in debt and that he couldn’t talk without pay.” “Today, I’m not merely broke, I’m deeply in debt. I wish I could visit campuses and speak for free but I can’t.” It’s the first of several campus speeches to be given by the Watergate figure - for a charge of $4000 apiece.

Wayne Newton is released from a Las Vegas hospital after a 10-day stay. He was treated for a repertory problem.

Music news – February 1, 1975
Elvis Presley is admitted into Baptist Hospital in Memphis for an intestinal blockage from a twisted lower colon. His doctor - George Nichopoulos says “We have found no evidence of other diseases and certainly not hepatitis or cancer or leukemia that some of his fans and friends have been worried about.”
Sonny Bono sues his wife Cher for more than $24 million charging she conspired with recording executive David Geffen and lawyers to defraud him of profits from television, recording and personal appearance agreements. He says her refusal to continue their “Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour” on CBS
cost him $1 million. Geffen is often seen with Cher and has been her frequent companion since she separated from Sonny.
Frank Sinatra will host the 47th Annual Oscar show on April 8. It will be his ninth time.
