The agriculture Department says retail food prices are expected to continue to rise – at a total 15% increase this year.
President Ford sings legislation and a proclamation declaring August 26 as Women’s equality day and urges the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment in the Constitution.
The Chicago Tribune announces that it will fold its afternoon “Chicago Today” newspaper. It’s the 17th largest newspaper in the country with a 400,000 circulation.

CBS is pulling Dan Rather away from reporting from the White House. He has drawn criticism for what some regard as his overly aggressive performance in presidential press conferences. Also being transferred, Robert Pierpoint – one of the toughest questioners Nixon press secretary Ronald Zieglar faced in daily briefings.

Tanya Tucker, who is now 15, says she dropped out of the ninth grade in 1972 just after she recorded “Jamestown ferry.” And she’s now working on her high school diploma by correspondence. Her first hit was “Delta Dawn” a few years ago and she’s been going non-stop since.
