John and Yoko – recently arrived (again) in Toronto and it appears, this time, they are staying with musician Ronnie Hawkins (The Band) at his house.  They want to set up a new Peace Council headquartered in Toronto and they plan to announce a mammoth rock Peace Festival in town July 3-5. The Peace Council, Lennon said, was going to be organized by Yoko and himself, comedian  Dick Gregory and Toronto rabbi Abraham Feinberg… Radio - After leaving WABC in September of 1968 – Herb Oscar Anderson is back on radio – this time on rival WHN New York. He was one of the top-rated morning men then – will he repeat the feat on WHN?... Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr appear in a press conference for their new movie “The Magic Christian.” One reporter did ask Ringo about the Beatles. Said Ringo: “We’ll be getting together again (squelching rumors about their break-up). “It’s crazy, these rumors, John said we would all be appearing in Toronto this summer, but we haven’t even talked about it yet”… Michael Parks - star of NBC’s “Then Came Bronson” has released a new album on MGM records. Cable TV update - the average subscriber pays $60 a year for cable service. Business Week magazine says it’s a great business to get into - because operating expenses of the average carrier are just $30 a subscriber. Once known as “Community Antenna Television” - it was used in mostly rural areas where a master antenna picked-up weak signals and retransmitted them via cable into television homes. CATV is now just getting into large cities and is growing at a rate of 20 go 25% a year. There are more than 2,500 systems now serving more than 4.5 million subscribers. Systems have been sold at a pricing rate of $200 to as high as $700 per home served Wall Street now places a $400-$500 value to each home set. Most systems carry about 12 channels, but coaxial cable, some say, has the capacity to carry up to 80 channels. The FCC, in a move to foster added diversity, just ruled that by next April 1, all CATV stations with 3,500 or more subscribers must originate programming as well as pick it up from over-the-air stations. Manhattan Cable in New York is a pioneer in original programming. It is the only system in the country that carries professional sports live and the only one that sows movies entirely without commercials. The owners are thinking of microwaving Madison Square Garden to other systems in other states… A federal study says that computer centers , with their clacking printers and data-processing machines, are noisy enough to cause permanent hearing damage to people who work in them. Most of the noise comes from the equipment used to cool the computers and the machines that feed data into the computers and receive the answers from them. A typical center with one computer and its data punching and assorted equipment has noise levels that range from 89 to 94 decibels throughout the day…

June - The Federal Communications Commission says it has approved an application by Western Union to acquire American Telephone & Telegraph’s teletypewriter exchange service ( TWX) for $85 million. TWX is a service that interconnects teletypewriters through an exchange much like telephones, permitting subscribers to communicate with each other….

July - Car tape systems - sorting out the confusion - you can get tapes in these formats - 8-track, 4-track and cassette. 8-tracks and 4-track cartridges are continuous playing - they don’t rewind like a cassette. Today, 4-track has the best quality, and 4- track tapes are the cheapest - about $5.98. 8-tracks are $1 more. But, more albums are available in 8- tracks and cassettes. Why is this? Because the main 8-track pusher, Lear, is pushing 8-tracks like crazy and record manufacturers make more money with 8-tracks. But cassettes are becoming more popular. With a cassette, you can record albums etc. So far, there are no recordable 8-track tape decks…

The three national television networks release a study reporting that they could save from 25 to 35% in the cost of distributing their programs either by means of a domestic satellite system or by a specialized microwave relay system on the ground. The networks are protesting recent rate increases by AT&T which maintains a multipurpose microwave system for TV show, telephone calls and data transmission…

September - A laser smaller than a grain of sand that can be operated for up to a million hours on power produced by flashlight batteries is announced by the Bell telephone System. The laser can be used like a sort of telephone wire, either in the earth’s atmosphere or between earth and space to carry messages, television images and other data now carried by sound waves…

RCA announces a new line of computers to compete with a new line introduced by IBM last June. Chairman and President Robert W. Sarnoff says the new line is in step for RCA to become #2 in computers behind IBM. The new computers are designated RCA 2,3, 6 and 7 and sell between $700 thousand and $1.68 million. You can lease them per month between $15,400 and 36,300 per month…

 Cigarette commercials to go away on January 2 at 12:01am and they’re going out in a bang as Philip Morris buys the 11:30p to midnight commercial slots of all three networks on January 1. And the January 1 Bowl games will be jammed with cigarette commercials. It’s said, the networks are now faced with a 10% loss of their gross revenues because of the disappearance of cigarette ads. Network ad salesmen have been pressing national retail chains, credit card companies, insurance companies, brokerage houses and travel-oriented businesses to display their messages on TV. Ads will be disappearing from radio as well…
