More March - New York DJ Murray the K has a new night spot called “Murray the K’s World.” It’s being called a “new concept of total theater.” Situated in Roosevelt Field, Long Island, it combines elements of closed circuit TV, Op and Pop art, rock ‘n’ roll (live and recorded) and elaborate electronic control systems. The dance floor is 5,000 square feet. On the four walls, are 21 screens alive with images synchronized with the live entertainment…Music news - the biggest selling album to date is “My Fair Lady”. The original Broadway cast album on Columbia Records has sold in excess of 6 million copies throughout the world. The soundtrack album of the film version has sold more than 1.5 million copies…“ Gloria” - a song written by Van Morrison, and a minor hit for him last year, is getting new legs by another group “The Shadows of Knight” from Chicago. More April - The cast of Perry Mason film their final episode - #271 this week. “The Case of the Final Fadeout” will air in May. Everyone from the make-up artists to the sound technicians will appear in bit parts. Dick Clark appears in the episode as well as the author of Perry Mason - Earl Stanley Gardner, who plays the judge…Peter & Gordon are in the U.S. for an eight-week coast-to-coast tour coinciding with the hit single - “Woman.” It’s their eighth American visit since 1964… Bob Dylan is on his first around-the-world tour. He played Honolulu and Australia last week. He’s set for Scandinavia, Dublin and other appearances in the United Kingdom next month. The raucous sendoff was in retaliation for the Beatles’ failure to keep a luncheon date with the Philippines first lady, Mrs. Ferdinand Marcos. The “snub” nearly turned into an international incident. The Beatles were left stunned…Frank Sinatra and Mia Farrow are engaged. I don’t know which will go first - rock ‘n’ roll or Christianity”… Beatles manager Brian Epstein flies into New York to convey John Lennon’s concern over the furor caused by his statements that the Beatles are more popular than Jesus Christ. The Fab- Four will begin a 19-day/14 city American tour starting next Friday and Epstein says he’s especially concerned about security during their visit. In a news conference, Epstein said that Lennon’s statements, which appeared in a U.S. teen-age magazine, were taken out of context….In radio news - some of the nation’s biggest top-40 stations won’t be banning Beatles records. On the last note of the song, the group ran off the stage and did not return, even though emcee Dan Daniel (WMCA Goodguy) called them back for an encore. Also on the bill - Simon and Garfunkle, who played such tunes as “I Am A Rock,” “Sounds of Silence” and “Red Rubber Ball,” the Paul Simon song, which was a hit for the Cyrkle...

September - John Lennon loses his Beatle hair cut for the first time since the group became popular. November - Batman has taken a dive in the ratings . Last week, the Thursday episode of Batman came in 36th place. The Wednesday episode came in at #60. Some say it was a good run for the network – which seems to appeal to the whims of younger viewers. Since ABC-TV has no star power - like CBS and NBC, fad shows are expected to come and go...The Green Hornet” hasn’t been doing well from the start. In the two TV ratings - it has placed 73rd and 77th among all shows…Walt Disney (64) is in a Burbank, California hospital for what studio sources are calling an old neck injury. A hospital official says that Disney is going through a series of diagnostic tests… New real-life superheroes are scheduled for January as “ Captain Nice ” will be introduced on NBC and “Mr. Terrific” on CBS. The comedy shows, about similar superheroes, will be on back-to-back on Monday evenings. “Captain Nice’ is about a meek young man employed as a chemist by the police department. He can take on super human powers and fly through the air, although he really doesn’t like flying… The New Vaudeville Band appears on The Ed Sullivan Show.” Looks like “Winchester Cathedral” is going to be a big hit… Beatlemania is over. There is no formal announcement, no fuss - but clearly it won’t be the same. John, Paul, George and Ringo are letting it be known that they are evolving in different directions. They will reunite for the occasional recording and film, but the grinding personal appearance tours are out… Singer Ray Charles is fined $10 thousand and given a suspended sentence of five years in jail and is placed on probation for four years in Boston on narcotic charges. She’ll appear in Chicago at the Ivanhoe Theater to play the leading roll of Tracy Lord in The Philadelphia Story….  Joey Bishop picks Regis Philbin as his announcer on the late-night “Joey Bishop Show” set to debut in April on ABC- TV. Philbin headlined his own late-night program for Westinghouse Broadcasting in 1964, where he was brought-in to replace Steven Allen from KOGO-TV (Channel 10) in San Diego. There’s no pay scale for FM DJ’s and the union wants to be sure DJ’s Scott Muni, Johnny Michaels and Murray the K are getting the “right” deal. Meantime, the station is segueing hit records – no DJ banter/jingles between the records -  unheard of in radio!... ABC signs Joey Bishop to go against Johnny Carson in the late-night talk show race. The Bishop show, scheduled to premiere next April, will originate in Hollywood and will have a format similar to NBC’s Tonight Show which Johnny Carson hosts from New York… “Romper Room” is popular on its 110 stations. The show is unique in that each television station produces their version, which is followed by a sort-of syndicated script. In San Francisco - Miss Nancy hosts the program on Channel 2.
