The shattered bodies of Patsy Cline, Hawkshaw Hawkins and Cowboy Copas were discovered, as well as Miss Cline’s manager Randy Hughes. They were returning to their Nashville homes from Kansas City, Kansas, where they had given a benefit performance for the family of Cactus Jack Call, a DJ recently killed in a traffic accident. The plane had stopped in Dyersburg, Tenn to refuel. It departed Dyersburg about 6 p.m. on the last hop to Nashville. The Dyersburg airport manager Bill Braese said Hughes had given his name as pilot of the craft. Miss Cline (29) was a native of Winchester, VA. Copas (49) was a native of Muskogee, Okla and a singer on the Opry for 17 years. Hawkins (43) joined the Opry in 1955. His wife, Jean Shepard, also an Opry singer, just announced that she was expecting their second child… Jack Anglin of the “Grand Ole Opry” team “Johnny and Jack” is killed in an automobile crash. More June (1963) – TV News - Made-for-television movies? - MCA says it will produce a full season of two-hour feature films for showing on NBC-TV. It’s reported to be one of the biggest deals in TV history. The feature films will be produced by Universal for weekly showing during the 1964-65 season. They will be shown simultaneously in movie theaters abroad. An informant of the deal says that the features will be shot in color and will not be low-budget “B” productions. They’ll feature top stars of Hollywood and television…It’s the end of an era - Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand,” which has made a name for itself on weekday afternoons, will become a Saturday-only show beginning August 30, when it also becomes a one-hour program. Two years ago, the 90-minute music program was whittled down to 50 minutes; in the fall of last year, it was cut back to 30 minutes each weekday afternoon. The writing was on the wall when the show was cut back to the 30-minute format. Not as many stations were clearing the program, instead moving it to other times, even weekends. Also, ABC has a firm commitment to rerun “Wagon Train” during the daytime - and it was almost impossible to expand the airtime… Elvis Presley highlights an all-star program for Ed Sullivan’s 15th anniversary, this Sunday on CBS-TV…

Since Nov. 23, Telstar had refused to accept command signals to turn on power to relay radio, television and other transmissions. November - Car Telephones - according to American Telephone & Telegraph, there are now more than 19,000 phones in cars throughout the United States. Some have phone antennas on their cars even though they don’t have phones… Update - Cable TV or Community Antenna television - is now 14 years old, beginning in Oregon and Pennsylvania in 1949. Uses a cable to bring-in television stations to viewers, who wouldn’t ordinarily receive television (either too far from a broadcast station, behind a hill or mountain etc). It’s estimated there are more than 1,200 CATV systems in 47 states, serving 1.3 million homes. According to Television Magazine, they take in more than $50 million a year. Still a province in small communities, some are eying the big cities. Irving Kahn, president of TelePrompTer Corp, says New York City is ripe for a CATV system. “The town that needs it most is New York. Some Manhattan television sets have trouble bringing in four of the seven channels available. Those tall buildings are murder, worse than mountains.” He also says with the increasing popularity of color television, a good television signal is needed. “You can get away with ‘ghosts’ on a black-and-white picture, but on color, it’s impossible.” TelePrompter says about 70% of its total business now comes from 14 CATV systems. It now has 8300 subscribers paying $5 a month for a system providing them with 10 channels as well as background music.
